A drone strike sank one of two vessels targeted off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast early Tuesday, Sofia said, according to Lidové noviny. President Rumen Radev asked the European Union and NATO for assistance.
Radev also summoned Russia's ambassador to Sofia, Eleonora Mitrofanova, the newspaper reported. Bulgaria recorded a similar strike in its maritime exclusive economic zone just last week, according to the same report.
The strike is the latest in a pattern of attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure that Western governments have tied to Moscow's campaign against vessels and supply routes linked to Ukraine. Bulgaria, a NATO and EU member on the Black Sea's western shore, has increasingly found itself exposed to that campaign.
By appealing directly to Brussels and NATO rather than handling the strike as a bilateral matter with Moscow, Sofia is seeking a collective response. That raises pressure on allies who have so far debated, but not agreed, how to protect Black Sea shipping lanes and undersea energy links running through the region.
What to watch: whether the EU and NATO treat the appeal as grounds for a joint naval or surveillance response, how Moscow reacts to the ambassador's summons, and whether further strikes follow the weekly pattern.
