Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been running on emergency diesel generators for more than a week after losing its connection to the external electricity grid, the UN's nuclear watchdog said, according to the Guardian and Al Jazeera.
Diesel generators exist as a last-resort backstop, meant to keep reactor cooling running for hours or days while grid power is restored — not to substitute for the grid over an extended stretch. A prolonged outage raises the risk that generators run out of fuel or fail mechanically, which would cut cooling to reactor cores and spent-fuel pools.
Why it matters: a cooling failure at a plant of this scale would not stay a local story. A radiological release there would carry consequences for Ukraine, its neighbours and the wider continent, not just the war zone around it.
The plant has been under Russian military control since the early weeks of the 2022 invasion and lies close to the front line, leaving its transmission lines exposed to the fighting around it. That proximity is the structural reason its power supply keeps breaking down rather than being a one-off technical fault.
