Mykhailo Fedorov, sacked as Ukraine's defence minister and previously the architect of its drone program, used a YouTube address on Tuesday evening to call for elections while war with Russia continues, according to France 24.
- Fedorov says Ukraine faces a "crisis of governance," defying the martial-law ban on voting in force since Russia's invasion began on 24 February 2022, per France 24
- His firing had already opened the biggest crisis of Zelensky's presidency; the address gave it "a new quality," reports the NZZ
- The Washington Post calls it a "remarkably direct challenge" to Zelensky's authority, via RealClearWorld
"This is complex," Fedorov said in the address, "complexity does not mean impossibility. Ukraine has repeatedly done what the world considered impossible," per France 24. It's a direct rebuttal of the legal argument Zelensky's government has relied on for three and a half years to avoid a vote.
Western governments have backed Ukraine's war effort partly on the argument that Kyiv presents a united front against Moscow; a former cabinet minister publicly challenging the president undercuts that at a moment when military and financial support already faces domestic skepticism in allied capitals.
Watch for whether other Ukrainian politicians publicly back Fedorov's call, and how Zelensky's office responds — silence or a hard rebuttal will signal how seriously Kyiv takes the threat to its wartime unity.
