It reads as boosterism from a lab competing for capital, but three developments this week show the same wager already being placed in nuclear command, national-security bureaucracy and American policing.

Command and control, sped up

Nine countries now hold nuclear weapons, and decades of arms-control architecture have largely collapsed, according to War on the Rocks. China is on a trajectory to roughly triple its arsenal, from about 600 warheads today to some 1,500 by 2035, the outlet reports. Flock Safety's license-plate-reading camera networks, deployed in jurisdictions including Kansas, amount to what the American Enterprise Institute describes as "an ongoing search for the location of everyone all the time" — a continuous surveillance capacity that breaks with the legal tradition of treating searches as discrete acts aimed at a specific suspect. AEI argues that mismatch is what sets the system up for a constitutional reckoning: courts must decide whether Fourth Amendment protections built for one-time searches can restrain a network built to watch continuously.

Who is actually paying for this

Underneath all three threads sits a structural shift the Cold War comparison obscures.
