The death toll from Monday's 7.4-magnitude earthquake in western Colombia has climbed past 240, according to France 24, a sharp rise from the 180 confirmed a day earlier.

Rescuers are racing to find survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings before the survival window closes. A 32-year-old woman was pulled alive from the rubble on Tuesday, according to France 24, but many others remain missing.

France 24 correspondent Maria Clara Calle, reporting from Cali, described ongoing search operations at collapsed structures across the region.

The disaster is the first major crisis for President Abelardo de la Espriella, who was inaugurated last Friday, according to France 24.
