Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that the United States plans to sanction another bank this week over its Iran-linked transactions, and expects Washington to roll out new secondary sanctions on a weekly basis going forward, according to the Associated Press and Reuters.
The move marks a shift from Washington's earlier case-by-case designations of Iran-linked banks to what Bessent calls a sustained, recurring campaign, per the Washington Times.
Secondary sanctions cut off foreign banks from the US financial system if they process transactions tied to sanctioned Iranian entities, forcing lenders worldwide to choose between doing business with Iran and keeping dollar access. Forbes has dubbed the campaign "Operation Economic Outcast."
A weekly cadence would multiply the pressure campaign, reaching foreign banks — often in Asia and Europe — that still process Iran's oil and trade revenue.
Bessent did not name this week's target, per AP and Reuters. Whether the pace holds, and which countries' banks are hit first, will show how far Washington is willing to escalate against Iran's remaining financial lifelines.
